Join us for a fun and fascinating event presented by the New York State Library in collaboration with the New York Archives Magazine!
Elizabeth Jakubowski (New York State Library) and Amy Lee (New York Archives Magazine) will dive into the rich history of zines—self-published booklets that have long served as a platform for alternative voices and creative expression.
From their roots in 1930s sci-fi fandom to their rise in the punk, feminist, and LGBTQ+ movements of the 70s and 80s, zines have been a vital tool for subcultures and activists to connect, resist, and create. The presentation will include facsimiles from the Library’s Factsheet Five collection and showcase real examples of zines.
After the talk, stick around for a hands-on workshop where you’ll get to make your very own zine!
All materials will be provided, but registrants are encouraged to bring additional materials to decorate. At the end of the workshop, each registrant will have their very own DIY zine along with the latest copy of New York Archives Magazine.
All programs are subject to change.
